A gruelling 6,500-nautical mile marathon to Cape Town begins on Saturday, but all could be won or lost in the first couple of days, according to Ericsson 4 navigator Jules Salter.
He believes any boat caught out by the fickle conditions of the Mediterranean Sea and left behind during the 450-nautical mile trip to the Strait of Gibraltar will suffer heavily once the rest of the fleet enter the Atlantic.
“The start of any race is important,” he said. “You wouldn’t want to get stuck here in a light spot and see the competitors going 40 or 50 miles ahead because once you get popped out through the straits you quite often get steady sailing after that.
“First into that and you will probably get a good advantage, but there are still 20, 18 days after that so if you a bit quicker you can maybe reel someone in. It will be pretty tough though.”
The view is shared by PUMA Ocean Racing’s Jonathan McKee. He said: “It’s entirely possible that this first leg will be determined by who makes a good escape.”
It is one of several points of consideration for the fleet ahead of a leg that includes a trip through the Doldrums and the challenge of the South Atlantic High (St. Helena High) pressure system, but equally pressing is how far west a team sails before charging south.
Telefonica Blue navigator Simon Fisher explained: “Getting west is the key to the North Atlantic. The problem is the later you leave it the harder it gets. If you go early it might look pretty bad because you are losing miles but it might pay off later on.”
The dilemma has been made harder than in previous years by a more southerly start port. Fisher added: “The fact you are a few hundred miles further south actually makes it harder because you have less latitude to get to where you want to be to cross the Doldrums.”
Salter said: “Now, it is more a VMG race west down the trades because you are pretty much hoping to get straight into the trades when we leave the Mediterranean.
”We could get a low pressure a long way south and it might be like an old situation where you try to try to play a front and get west and then go south. I think that it is still true that west is best but you are getting there a slightly different way. Rather than upwind you are now trying to do it as a VMG downwind exercise.”
Fisher is relishing the challenge ahead. He said: “We have the Med which is potentially very awkward for the first 24, 36 hours. There are a lot of potholes in that bit of the road. We did all our development out of Alicante and we know all about it.
“Then there are the trade winds to deal with, making your move west, the Doldrums, then back in the trades, South Atlantic High and then choosing when to turn left. Plenty of challenges ahead. It should be great fun.”
“It’s a busy leg for the navigators,” said Wouter Verbraak, the man plotting the course for Team Russia. “We’ll have plenty of work to do, but I think everyone is looking forward to what is going to happen.”
